Haristos Orthodox church at Hakodate, Hokkaido

Posted by
Japanalia (Yokohama, Japan) on 31 August 2013 in Art & Design and Portfolio.

This church was the first Orthodox church in Japan.Originally constructed in 1859, completely rebuilt after 1916 fire. The interior is all Byzantine grandeur. Locals jokingly refer to it as "Gangan-dera" (meaning clanging temple) for the sound of its European-style bells, harsh in comparison to the mellow gongs of Japanese temples. Original bells, cast in Greece, were transferred to senior. St. Nikolai Cathedral in Kanda, Tokyo, upon its completion in 1874.
My husband liked the photo of the building and decided to make a watercolour after it; this is the result.

Very beautiful and such a lovely watercolor.
Funny how what is familiar to a people (mellow gongs) sounds strange to another group and vice versa.
