iris flowers had bloomed

Here's another of Basho's haikus that he wrote during "The Narrow Road to the Deep North", his trip from Edo (old Tokyo) to Tohoku (north of the island of Honshu). He was an excellent diarist, besides being the greatest of the Japanese haiku poets. His several journeys through Japan (in the 17th century) are recorded in linked prose and verse. "The Narrow Road to the Deep North" is his work famous all over the world.
