Though it is said that irises have been planted in this area since the 17th century, it was early in the 19th century that several gardens at Horikiri (located about 6 miles east of the center of Tokyo) became famous for the display of "hanashobu"( the name given to iris in Japanese).The most famous among all was the Kodaka-en, the one you see in the image, which lived to see the 21st century.
