Iris Gallery: night blue

Posted by Japanalia (Yokohama, Japan) on 23 June 2008 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

One of the many, many irises in the Horikiri Iris Garden located in the old district of Katsushika-ku in Tokyo, an area still considered "downtown", though modernisation did away with the last remains of a picturesque past. The garden has been known since, at least, the 17th century. It has been the subject of many woodblock prints, some of which I'm going to present to you in the next postings. The garden is tiny, a colourful oasis surrounded by residences, big and small, and almost under one of the busiest highways in Tokyo. The Japanese irises are some of the most elegant flowers competing fiercely with their sisters, the( garden) bearded irises (which do not need to grow in water).
