The classic style of this building is inspired by the mansions of the English aristocracy, using bricks covered with slate. The outer walls are made of reddish stone, andesite, brought from Manazuru on Izu peninsula. When this stone becomes wet because of rain, the colour changes to a subdued tone. The Western portion of this estate was built on a hill with the rose garden located on the slope. On a much lower level there is also a Japanese garden of exquisite beauty, designed by a famous garden designer from Kyoto. The currently existing residence and rose garden were designed by the English architect Josiah Condor, who made many contributions to the development of architecture in Japan. In 1982, the garden was designated as a famous site.
