Garyobai.......... (Yoshiyuki's)

Posted by Japanalia (Yokohama, Japan) on 6 March 2008 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

......is the trunk of a Japanese plum tree which looks like a crawling dragon. The tree is located in Sankeien, Yokohama's most famous Japanese garden. This year we managed to see it in full bloom on Febr.28.My husband tried to get the whole tree in this shot.

This tree was the model for the famous masterpiece "Yoroboshi", a folding screen by famous nihonga painter Kanzan Shimomura (1873-1930). He was one of the proteges of Sankei Hara, the rich silk trader who created Sankei Garden - first as his property and then offered it to the public in 1906.Sankei Hara enjoyed arts and the company of artists, many of them found inspiration in this marvelous garden.
Tomorrow I'll show you the famous folding screen which was inspired by this tree and tell you the story.
